Once in a Sleep is an ongoing experimental data visualization and translation concept. This project contains a short film and a generative translation of people’s sleep in the hope of bridging the gap between the research data on sleep and people’s physical and mental experience of sleep. I hope through creating less transactional communication between one’s sleep data and one’s personal experience of sleep, the science behind sleep can be democratized.

An electroencephalogram (EEG) device is attached to the participant to measure the brain waves during sleep. Brain waves are then used to analyze a cycle of their sleep. Visual and sound representations of different stages of the sleep cycle are created as a film that the participant can take away.
